When you arrive, a visit to the château is a must, as the building is so breathtaking. Incredible facades nibbled here and there by a marvel of vegetation, superbly sculpted medieval towers, a succession of corbels, a fresco of arcades winding along the water's edge... Built in the 13th century, Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers has undergone various periods of renovation, including one in the early 19th century, which gave it its distinctive neo-Gothic style. Combining elements of medieval architecture (machicolations, archères) and Renaissance architecture (arabesques, sculptures), this château is an "architectural folly", as the guides like to say. And all you have to do is walk around the lake to realize that, while Château de la Mothe Chandeliers is a one-piece edifice, it has many faces. All singular.
Other world
Once inside the building, you won't be disappointed. Because that's what it's all about. We're transported to another time, another world. Lining the stones, seeping into the walls, reaching for the sky, vegetation has gracefully conquered this majestic ruin. Here, nature rubs shoulders with an immense vestibule, cherubs and a splendid spiral staircase. It's as if time stood still decades ago.
And this was indeed the case, as a violent fire ravaged a huge part of the château in 1932. Left abandoned for 85 years, nature reclaimed its rightful place within its walls. It wasn't until 2017 that the Dartagnans strat-up and the Adopte un château association launched a worldwide fundraising campaign to buy back and restore the building.
Today, the château "belongs" to 27910 "co-chatelains" in 115 countries, who have raised over 2 million euros.
Ecolodges: a cosy nest for the night
Once the tour is over, why not take a seat in the orangery, a magnificent vessel of cast iron and glass, where you can sip a Spritz or a glass of white wine? The view of the castle from here is simply breathtaking. And since you're spending the night, wait until sunset to see the illuminations projected onto the façade. The spectacle is simply incredible.
It's time to return to your ecolodge, where your cosy nest awaits you on the second floor. This is your chance to admire the illuminations one last time from this promontory, or to read a book and fall into the arms of Morpheus. At night, there's not a sound to be heard, apart from the birds and animals that inhabit the forest. The next day, nothing beats the sight of the sun rising to caress the castle's façade.
